High Plains 2006 "End of Year" Storm
As much as 3/4" to 1" of ice accmulated on trees and powerlines over much of Southwest Kansas west of a line from Liberal to Dodge City to Wakeeney. 2 to 3" of total ice accumulated in some parts of Southwest KS causing significant damage. Several thousand utility poles were toppled from the weight of the ice and strong north winds of 25 to 40 mph. The worst of the ice occurred along a corridor stretching from Hugoton to Ulysses to Dighton and Garden City in Southwest Kansas. In the western portion of the ice storm, moderate to heavy snow followed with 4 to 9 inches of snow with significant drifting. West of the heavy ice where it was mostly snow...mainly along and west of the Kansas-Colorado border...some outrageous snowfall totals were reported from this storm. 20 to 30" of storm total snowfall occurred in the Lamar, Eads, Cheyenne Wells, Sheridan Lake areas of southeastern and far east-central Colorado. In Kansas, Sharon Springs was the big winner...south of Goodland, with around 30" of snowfall. The winds caused unbelievable blizzard conditions with drifts as tall as 2-story buildings!!
